We love the description that Valerie Worthington wrote in her article 'The Gentle Art Of Humility: Ego And Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu': In jiu-jitsu, humility should flow through every interaction on the mat, simultaneously communicating respect, healthy self-esteem, and a willingness to defer to others.

What are some ways you can exemplify humility at your gym?

Always shake hands before and after a roll

Respect everyone, instructors and students alike

Tap early, tap often to avoid injury

Acknowledge your partner's progress

Be a good partner and don't give resistance unless asked to

Focus on improvement, not how many times you can tap your partner

Don't attack an injured body part of your training partner

Bow on and off the mats and always ask permission to leave the mat area

Train for yourself and not to please anyone else

Have a positive attitude and be open to learning from those around you
