What Is JJWL?
Jiu Jitsu World League is one of the most popular tournament organizations in the country and regularly hosts events in Arizona. JJWL tournaments are known for organized brackets, multiple match opportunities, and a strong competitive experience for youth, adults, and masters competitors.
For many students, JJWL events are a great way to gain experience, build confidence, and test their training in a structured tournament setting.
JJWL Phoenix Event Basics
JJWL Phoenix events typically include divisions for:
- Youth competitors
- Adult competitors
- Masters competitors
- Gi divisions
- No-Gi divisions
These tournaments are often held at large venues in the Phoenix area, such as Mullett Arena in Tempe, and can include a full day of matches across multiple mats.
How JJWL Brackets Work
One of the things that makes JJWL different is the way brackets are structured to maximize match opportunities when possible.
- 2-person bracket: Best 2 out of 3 matches
- 3-person bracket: Round robin
- 4 to 9 competitors: Double elimination with a chance to compete for 3rd place
- Youth 10+ competitors: Brackets may be split to help ensure multiple matches
- Adults and Masters 10 to 15 competitors: Double elimination with a chance to compete for 3rd place
- Adults and Masters 16+ competitors: Brackets may be split into multiple divisions
This format can give competitors more mat time than a standard single-elimination format, which is especially valuable for students who are still building tournament experience.
Weigh-Ins and Weight Classes
JJWL requires competitors to make weight for their registered division. It is important to check your event details and keep your weight class updated before the cutoff date.
- Weight changes usually close 8 days before the event
- Competitors must weigh in at least 1 hour before their first scheduled match
- Gi weigh-ins are done wearing the gi
- Youth competitors are typically allowed up to 0.9 pounds over their listed weight class
If you are close to the top of your division, talk with your coach well before tournament day so you can make a smart decision about your weight class.
